Strange Bedfellows

We just recently started the lovey concept with lil' Monkey, just prior to him getting sick as a matter of fact. We allowed one soft rattle shaped like a monkey (go figure) to be in his crib starting around Christmastime. But his monkey rattle was one of the first causalties during his illness. It along with a few other toys were quarantined in the to-be-washed bag which took me a long time to go through! He's been endowed with so many toys!

So Monkey has replaced his monkey with a new lovey or shall I say loveys (is that the plural form of lovey?). And they're kinda strange really. He's decided that his toy hammer is a source of comfort as well as the rubber ducky we usually have in the bathtub. Seems like two very strange bedfellows, if you ask me. But whatever works, right?

I was wondering, how many parents out there let their child take a lovey with them to sleep? And if so, what kind of lovey do they prefer? And for those with older children, did the lovey become an issue later?

My 13 month old has her favorite toys, but as of yet she hasn't needed anything to comfort her to sleep. At 8 she is out like a light : ) but later once her talking skills are developed and she tells me she wants something I wouldn't have a problem letting her take something to bed. Hey I if comforts him and it makes him happy go for it.

ours had a couple small stuffed toys (when i say small i mean it - just slightly larger than her hands) that she liked to sleep with while holding in each hand at about 6 months. soon one of them (the butterfly) won out, and she had to sleep with it all the time. soon enough it got dirty and started to come apart at the seams, especially after we washed it.

well her favorite daytime cuddler (doogan - whom she named at 6.5 months) started becoming her favorite to sleep with right at about the time we decided to retire the butterfly (about 10 months). and she hasn't looked back. :-)

cpl -- wow! you are so lucky! Monkey was good about going to bed when he was 3-5 months old but since the teething started, all bets are off. I'm so envious of your little bedtime angel!

kz -- Did she have any issue with giving up the butterfly? Or did it just kinda disappear when she wasn't looking and that was that? I foresee the hammer biting the dust eventually too.

no problem with the butterfly, doogan took it's place, and she plays with the butterfly, but is in LOVE with doogan :-) kinda like she broke up with the butterfly, but they're still friends.

Well, I didn't do a "one favorite" anything with any of my wee ones. I can't stand when a child spazes over some favorite item they lost or left somewhere, so made sure mine never got that attached to any "one" item. They seem happy and well adjusted. Now at age 4 my middle one has this puppy she apparently loves. How do I know? We left it at a friends after the game last night and she was not quiet about it. Good news is, she went to sleep w/o it, so I guess she isn't TOO attached, so I'll take that as a victory! :) This is coming from a girl who stood outside the washing machine when her blanket was in there for it's annual washing--at age 5 or 6! ha ha
