Beach Nightmares

I never thought I'd ever put those two words together. I love the beach. Especially in the morning when you first wake up and can look out onto the waves. That's just lovely and a really nice way to begin your day.

However, I had a nightmare about the beach. We're going away soon ... yes, to the beach, how'd you guess? Anyway, I had a dream that lil' Monkey runs off into the water like a mad man and is instantly swept away by a wave. I haven't had it again since but the image of it keeps playing in my head. Then today I was talking to my company's CFO and he was describing how he basically played goalie between his daughter and the ocean. Sounds like fun. He did advise that one of those little life vests will give me better piece of mind. But Monkey doesn't seem old enough for the ones I've found on the web so far.

I'm hoping I won't be such a nervous wreck while on vacation this year that I won't ever want to go to the beach again (although I'm pretty sure DH wouldn't mind that at all since he hates being away from the game home for any length of time). So if any of you have tips on taking a toddler to the beach which might reduce either stress or paranoia, I'd love to hear them.

P.S. If any of you have tips on getting your toddler to keep his sunglasses on, that would be helpful, too! I bought him the kind with the strap but he still takes them off!

That's a horrible nightmare. Hopefully the beach will be fun though. My parents bought our little girl a tiny life-vest for the boat. She wore it when she was 10mo and 19mo - both times it fit pretty good (just a little bulky though). So if you can't find something, maybe try a boat store? We also have a on Heman lookin' suit with floats built into the chest area and that is definitely for older kids because it seems to tip her over. Make sure you bring a blow-up pool with toys to the beach. Then he'll have water to play in that doesn't have waves (and it's compact to travel with). Who knows, you might even find that he's afraid of the ocean. Our girl is 50/50, it totally depends on her mood if she'll even go near the water. Does he like to wear hats? I found that our girl doesn't mind them so much when she's busy playing (same with sunglasses, especially when it's really bright). Relax! Have Fun!

well, we have a kid leash. Sasha isn't overly interested in walking everywhere yet (he can...he just doesn't, inexplicably). That might help you. When we were on vacation, I can't tell you how many people we saw with them on their kid. It appeared helpful.

As for the sunglasses, got me. He keeps taking them off and trying to put them on us. Only his aim is poor. We've both had black eyes.

I highly recommend a life vest. They do make them small enough, you've just got to look. Boat stores are a good suggestion. A coworker who used to lifegaurd and who has a house on the beach says he puts them on his kids whenever they are playing by the water.

When we went, the Pumpkin was not interested in the water much, I think because it was too cold. She spent a lot of time playing in the sand on the beach. We had a lot of fun.

I have no help for the sunglasses though. The Pumpkin is only finally starting to wear a hat!

dana -- the baby pool idea is a good one. If I think we can fit it, we'll definitely take one (our packing list is HUGE).

everyone -- I found a vest (not Coast Guard rated though) on Amazon that was small enough. It's one of those kind where there's effectively a small board on the front and back. They're meant mainly for pools but it's better than nothing. Boater's World and West Marine were both either sold out of the infant vests or didn't carry them small enough. I tried searching for a boating store nearby but apparently we're not close enough to water to warrant one. I'd have to drive at least 45 minutes to get to the nearest one.

So hopefully the one I ordered from Amazon is nice enough. If anything, we can go to a boating store when we get to the beach ... there's GOT to be one, or more, there, right?!
